Over the past two decades\, IoT and edge computing have emerged as a critical component of the twin Green and Digital transition\, revolutionising business models\, technological advancements\, and service offerings. The advancement of edge computing and its potential to transform various sectors requires a robust and harmonized approach to standardisation across domains. \n\n\n\nGeopolitical and competitive challenges further underscore the need for a unified approach to IoT standardisation. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing\, we can navigate these challenges effectively and ensure that European interests are safeguarded in the global IoT landscape. A common angle on standardisation at the international level should be thought of by collaborating with relevant international entities in the definition/creation of international standards in key emerging technologies\, shaping the future of industries and technology users worldwide with a special focus on like-minded countries. \n\n\n\nThis joint workshop\, organised by the European Commission with the collaboration of CEI-Sphere and INSTAR\, aims to reflect on gaps in standardisation across different domains and relevant industry stakeholders\, address the critical questions around international standardization activities and the EU involvement in them\, foster cross-fertilization between ongoing projects in IoT and edge computing\, and facilitate roadmap brainstorming. The workshop aims to promote a common angle on standardisation at the international level by collaborating with relevant international entities in the definition/creation of international standards in key emerging technologies. Key standardisation committees and initiatives\, such as ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41 (SC41) and SAREF\, will be at the forefront of discussions\, with a focus on accelerating and streamlining standardization work across projects.

These devices have vastly different characteristics. Edge devices have limited resources\, frequent connectivity loss\, and are highly dynamic\, whereas data centers offer unlimited resources\, strong connectivity guarantees\, and stability. Although developing applications for data center-oriented environments is simpler\, modern distributed applications are increasingly shifting towards edge resources. This shift highlights the need to address the complexities of building these edge-centric applications. In this context\, our workshop aims to explore theoretical and practical approaches addressing the complexities of developing decentralized applications in today’s computing ecosystems. \n\n\n\nOur workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners focused on decentralized systems\, to discuss design principles\, development methods\, static and dynamic verification techniques\, security and safety\, case studies\, best practices\, and experience reports. DESCRIPTION:“Tackling the ever-increasing complexities of developing efficient heterogeneous swarm systems” – an EUCloudEdgeIoT Webinar\n\n\n\nAs Europe creates a pathway for the understanding and development of the Cloud\, Edge and IoT Continuum and supporting research and innovation initiatives to develop applications across the continuum\, the paradigm also incorporates development of swarm and decentralized applications. In edge computing scenarios where there is a need for decentralized decision-making and coordination among edge devices\, swarm computing principles can be applied; such a decentralized and self-organizing concept and architecture fit particularly well hyper-distributed\, sovereignty-enabling\, heterogeneous data management challenges\, such as the ones found in European Data Spaces. Additionally\, edge devices can act as agents in a swarm\, collectively making decisions and adapting to changing conditions without relying on a central controller.  \n\n\n\nIn this session\, co-organised – under the EUCloudEdgeIoT initiative – by TaRDIS and Programming Platform for Intelligent Collaborative Deployments over Heterogeneous Edge-IoTEnvironments (formerly INCODE)\, will bring together the 5 Horizon Europe projects answering to the swarm computing call and are addressing the ever-increasing complexities of developing correct and performant heterogeneous swarm systems. \n\n\n\nThe project Programming Platform for Intelligent Collaborative Deployments over Heterogeneous Edge-IoTEnvironments enables an open and trusted cloud-native programming platform poised to tame the emerging dynamism of distributed and heterogeneous private edge infrastructures (seen as a combination of intelligent edge node and diverse types of smart IoT devices with processing capabilities over programmable data plane resources).  \n\n\n\nThe TaRDIS project addresses the ever-increasing complexities of developing correct and performant heterogeneous swarms by providing a novel programming model\, integrated development and analysis environment\, and corresponding runtime support. TaRDIS proposes a language-independent event-driven programming model that allows developers to specify the behaviour of different components in their distributed system as a collection of autonomous collaborative nodes.The OASEES project will deliver a European\, fully open-source\, decentralized\, and secure Swarm programmability framework for edge devices and leveraging various AI/ML accelerators (FPGAs\, SNNs\, Quantum) while supporting a privacy-preserving Object ID federation process.The ambition of OpenSwarm project is to enable novel\, future energy-aware swarms of collaborative smart nodes with wide range benefits for the environment\, industries\, and society. \n\n\n\nThe SMARTEDGE project aims to enable decentralised edge intelligence for smart IoT applications\, ensuring reliability\, security\, privacy\, and scalability. DESCRIPTION:The 1st International Workshop on Machine Learning for Autonomic System Operations in the Device-Edge-Cloud Continuum (MLSysOps 2023)\n\n\n\nIn conjunction with the International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN 2023)\, September 25\, 2023\, Rende\, Italy. \n\n\n\nTo address the ever-increasing deluge of data collected and processed by computing systems\, the trend of edge computing is establishing the effectiveness of processing data as close as possible to their source\, often consisting of dense networks of wireless sensor nodes and IoT devices. It is predicted that by 2025 around 80% of enterprise data will be generated and processed outside the traditional cloud. In fact\, edge computing is becoming even more attractive with the advent of energy-efficient micro-servers and powerful embedded devices with significant storage and processing capabilities. The advent of device-cloud-edge (D-E-C) computing aggravates the challenging task of managing heterogeneous and distributed resources\, this time at an extreme scale\, making human-in-the-loop management completely unrealistic. To achieve dynamic and flexible system and application management with minimal user involvement\, the concept of autonomic computing systems was proposed as “computing systems that can manage themselves given high-level objectives from administrators”. However\, the scale\, heterogeneity\, high dynamicity\, and intrinsic local properties/variability of the continuum yields rule-based approaches – traditionally used in autonomic systems – insufficient. Machine learning-/AI-driven management is a promising alternative\, but the quest to extend this to the full continuum faces several challenges such as scalability\, heterogeneity\, dynamics\, trust & security\, and transparency. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the workshop is therefore to bring together a community of researchers and practitioners who study problems at the intersection of AI/ML\, autonomic and cognitive computing\, D-E-C continuum\, distributed system operation\, and resilient application deployment.

DESCRIPTION:First Summer School on Distributed and Replicated Environments\n\n\n\nThe DARE summer school aims to prepare master’s students and PhD students for advanced study in the field of distributed systems. In this edition\, we focus on techniques for supporting high availability. The school combines theory and practice. Through lectures by active researchers in the field\, students will get acquainted with state-of-the-art techniques and the latest research advances. Moreover\, in hands-on sessions\, students can also develop and experiment with existing frameworks. \n\n\n\nThe prospective topics to be covered in this edition include: \n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to highly available distributed systems\n\n\n\nDesigning and implementing replicated data types\n\n\n\nVerification techniques for highly available systems\n\n\n\nBroadcast algorithms\n\n\n\nTesting and debugging distributed systems\n\n\n\nProgramming models for replicated distributed systems\n\n\n\nByzantine fault-tolerance\n\n\n\n\nDARE 2023 is a summer school organized within the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme funded by the European Union. It consists of a one-week course held from Monday 11th September 2023 to Friday 15th September 2023 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels\, Belgium. These in-person sessions are combined with online introductory and closing sessions.

SUMMARY:Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT
DESCRIPTION:The blurring barriers between Cloud and Edge computing are giving birth to a computing continuum where services and data must be managed and secured efficiently. Especially with new trends like the Metaverse\, the demand for (hybrid) cloud computing services and edge computing is expected to skyrocket. As recent studies suggest\, new data processing needs are appearing at the edge. This not only for reducing latency but also to ensure data availability and privacy protection.  Running and managing data analytics and AI where it is more efficient and effective is to be supported in the Cloud-Edge-IOT continuum. \n\n\n\nAdvancing the IoT can avoid skyrocketing communication and storage costs\, energy consumption and produce benefits for citizens and businesses thanks to the integration of AI and Machine Learning.  \n\n\n\nIn addition\, an open ecosystem built around Open Source and Open Standards is key to unleashing the potential of the European industry in driving green and digital transformation while preserving EU strategic autonomy. Software defined infrastructures based on Open Source and Open Standards will support the next step in the Cloud-Edge-IOT continuum while preventing lock-in and favouring a competitive economy for the benefit of EU citizens. \n\n\n\nThese trends have called for a shift towards the technical and business convergence of the so-far formally separated Cloud\, Edge and IoT domains\, towards an open Cloud\, Edge and IoT Computing Continuum.
